CBO and JCT release preliminary estimate of Senate Finance Committee healthcare overhaul package

On October 7, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) released a preliminary analysis of the America's Healthy Future Act of 2009, which incorporates the amendments adopted by the Senate Finance Committee.
CBO and JCT estimate that enacting the amended bill would cost $829 billion over 10 years and reduce the deficit by $81 billion over that same period. These costs would be largely offset by spending changes - including $404 billion in reduced Medicare and Medicaid spending - and other provisions that would increase federal revenues.

House leaders face challenge of merging healthcare bills

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is meeting in closed-door sessions with other House leaders and committee chairs, working to combine the three separately approved House committee bills into a single version that could win the 218 of the 256 Democratic votes needed for passage. Although the House would like to take action before the Senate, it appears unlikely that House floor action will occur within the next two to three weeks.
