House Passes Healthcare Overhaul Bill
The Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962) was narrowly passed by the House of Representatives on November 7 by a vote of 220 to 215. One Republican, Representative Joseph Cao of Louisiana, joined all but 39 Democrats in voting for the measure. The action now moves to the Senate, where lawmakers await cost estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) before proceeding to consider a bill that will merge the Senate Finance Committee and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee bills.

More than one hundred healthcare and philanthropy leaders from across the region gathered at the Akron-Summit County Public Library on November 6 to attend Summa Health System's second annual Health Policy Summit. August Napoli, president and COO of the Summa Foundation, opened the forum by highlighting the evolution of Summa and the role its foundation is playing to advance a community transformation agenda.

SummaCare Discusses Health Reform

Insurance President Featured in National Publication
Martin Hauser, president of SummaCare, is featured in the November 2009 edition of Managed Healthcare Executive. In the Managed Care Outlook Column, Hauser discusses the idea of state-level insurance exchanges.
In the editorial, Hauser says that in concept, health insurance exchanges would create a new marketplace through which consumers could buy quality health insurance coverage at an affordable price. One major bill in Congress would establish a national exchange, and other bills would create state or regional exchanges (or "gateways," as one bill calls it). Health plans would compete to offer consumers health insurance coverage at the best value.
