The Federal Budget and Healthcare

President Makes Investment Toward Reform

In his first address to Congress on February 24, 2009, President Obama pledged to tackle healthcare reform during his term in office. That pledge is reflected in the Administration's proposed fiscal year 2010 budget as well, in which the Health and Human Services budget has been increased by 7.5 percent.

State Budget Impact on Hospital Community

Summa Hospitals Reviewing Impact on Operations

In an effort to balance the state's two-year budget, Governor Strickland has proposed a Hospital Corporate Franchise Fee be paid by hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities. According to the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA), hospitals would pay $597 million to the state in additional assessments yet would only receive $187 million back through a modest increase in Medicaid reimbursement.

Summa Health System is hosting its second annual Community Leadership Briefing on Friday, May 8, 2009, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the main branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library. The event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required.

Congressman Boccieri Visits Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital

Federal Leader and Hospital Exchange Ideas

Congressman John A. Boccieri of Ohio's 16th District visited Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital on February 18, 2009, to exchange information regarding healthcare and local economic developments. Hospital board, administrative and community leadership provided an overview of the hospital and its role in meeting the healthcare needs of Medina county residents.
