Summa's Reaction to Reform

On March 25, Congress made history by enacting comprehensive healthcare reform. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is both exciting and overwhelming. Many provisions in the bill are designed to transform how healthcare is financed and delivered to the American people. As the largest health system in the five county region, Summa is looking forward to partnering with public and private sector leadership to implement healthcare reform on a local level. Summa is committed to this community and its needs and will continue to provide the highest quality of care possible.

President Signs Healthcare Reform Into Law

Late last month, President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, comprehensive legislation based on the healthcare reform bill previously passed by the Senate. Enactment of the bill came after a complex series of votes—a House vote on the Senate-passed bill, another House vote on the budget reconciliation bill that amends the Senate bill; and a Senate vote on the reconciliation bill, which made minor changes to the bill and then had to be approved by the House.

How Healthcare Reform Will Impact Hospitals

The healthcare reform law includes a number of delivery system reforms that will impact hospitals. These changes include:

  • The creation of a value-based purchasing program in Medicare

  • A provision allowing providers organized as accountable care organizations (ACOs) that voluntarily meet quality thresholds to share in the cost savings they achieve for the Medicare program

    Congressman Tim Ryan Visits Robinson Memorial Hospital

    On Tuesday, April 6th, Summa affiliate Robinson Memorial Hospital hosted United States Congressman Tim Ryan (17th District) in his efforts to learn how the hospital’s leadership envision the recent changes in healthcare law and policy will affect their organization. Specifically, Ryan took the time to gather more information about Robinson’s electronic medical record (EMR) initiative, toured the emergency department, and shared with employees his perspective on how healthcare reform will affect the hospital and Portage County communities.
