Republicans Gain Control of the House; Senate Democrats Lose Six Seats but Maintain Majority

In the largest turnover in the House of Representatives in more than 70 years, the Republicans gained control of the chamber with 239 seats to the 188 held by Democrats, with 8 races still undecided. Prior to the election, the Democrats had 255 seats to the Republicans’ 178.

With a Republican majority, current House Minority Leader John Boehner (OH) is slated to become Speaker of the House next January. Minority Whip Eric Cantor (VA) is expected to be voted in as Majority Leader. On the Democratic side, current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) was elected by the Democratic Party caucus as Minority Leader while current Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) was elected as Minority Whip. Majority Whip, James Clyburn (SC) was selected for the newly created position of Assistant Leader.

Senate leadership will likely remain in the hands of Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV) and Majority Whip Richard Durbin (IL). Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) is slated to remain in that position.

Locally, Congresswoman Betty Sutton and Congressmen Tim Ryan and Steve LaTourette emerged victorious in their respective races. However, Congressman John Boccieri fell to defeat against Congressman-elect Jim Renacci.
